John Brought a Letter
This play is about the legacy of code in African-American music art and folklore. How does modern day society perceive and receive it? If the past left us clues about the present and future... How would we know it? Where would our ancestors hide such detail? I tell you where... in the music, dance, and in the art.
The title is based on the song a group of slaves came up with after receiving the Emancipation Proclamation. John was the only one of them who could read.
This work in progress will feature segments of a piece Valerie is working on, combining voice, drums, monologue, poetry and storytelling. Featuring spoken word champion Joyce Lee, Poetivist Malcolm Shabazz Hoover, Vocalist Valerie Troutt and Lyricist Krabral Muhammad.
Special guest Harpist Destiny Muhammad opens the evening.
