LISA MEZZACAPPA'S INTERLOPERS (9:30pm)
Bay Area bassist Lisa Mezzacappa's string band the Interlopers is inspired as much by the songs of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys as the string quartets of Bartok and the free jazz epiphanies of Billy Bang. After so many years of playing with saxophones, trumpets and drum sets, Mezzacappa has recently found herself called back to the string family, where so much acoustic fun can be had with subtle textures, blending timbres and explosive rhythms. The group is composed of some of the Bay Area's finest improvisers, navigating Mezzacappa's squirley compositions and unusual arrangements.
Murray Campbell, violin
Crystal Pascucci, cello
John Finkbeiner, acoustic guitar and banjo
Lisa Mezzacappa, acoustic bass

THE HOLLY MARTINS (10:30pm)
Named after the main character in the classic postwar film, The Third Man, the Holly Martins is a trio of Bay Area musicians dedicated to exploring the boundaries of jazz-infused improvised music, but without the trappings of a traditional "rhythm section". This configuration requires each individual to simultaneously take on multiple roles typically assigned individual players (soloist versus accompanist), thereby promoting more open-ended explorations of the material. With Benedict’s signature freestyle scat singing, Vogler’s sinuous lines and Knudsen’s wily counterpoint, the group navigates original compositions as well as arrangements of jazz standards and Romantic music.
Lorin Benedict, voice
Kasey Knudsen, alto saxophone
Eric Vogler, guitar
