Cura de Locos/ Mad Cures
Join us on this rare acoustic LoCura performance-a musical journey traversing the Mediterranean, Africa, Latin America with the sounds of strings, brass, palmas, voice and the cajon. Featuring special guests and new songs from local poets & artists that have inspired our path. Audience participation required.
Direct from San Francisco’s fertile music scene, LoCura taps into the diverse sounds that have a rich history in the Bay Area, weaving them together in an uncanny way to reveal their common roots. Mixing Flamenco with Reggae and Cumbia with Ska through contagious rhythms and multiple languages, their music takes you on a ride through a day in the emerging globalized experience where the movement of people and ideas are in constant flux. Reflecting lead vocalist Kata’s own experience of growing up Spanish American in Spain, Italy, and the U.S., LoCura’s music rides the borders of identity and migration piecing together a mosaic of our myriad cultures and experiences. Featuring Bob Sanders on guitar, Melissa Cruz on palmas & baile, Patricio Angulo on congas, Sergio Duran on cajon & percussion, & Kata Miletich on vocals. LoCura's music is filled with a sense of longing and hope. We want to evoke a world without borders, a time where we begin to recognize each other and our common grounds. With our music we hope to bring people from diverse experiences together in one space of celebration and reflection, and open up dialogue.
Taraf de Locos
Taraf de Locos is a five-piece band based out of San Francisco, California. They play a wide range of music genres from all over the world, including music from countries like Albania, Turkey, Greece, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, and more. The band was originally formed in 2013 by violinist/vocalist Aya Safiya, saxophonist/guitarist/vocalist Tano Brock, trumpeter/vocalist Cecilia Peña-Govea, and percussionist/vocalist Miguelito León. In 2014, a fifth member, bassist Mireya León joined. The four founding members grew up together at a music camp in the foothills near Fresno, CA, where they played music until the sun came up for ten days every summer. Their history as childhood friends creates a unique chemistry that comes out in their music.
Their music is a reflection of the members themselves. Each member of the band comes from a different musical background, and therefore brings a different sound to the band. Aya grew up playing primarily Greek folk music, Cecilia grew up playing mostly traditional Mexican music, Miguel grew up playing Latin percussion of all kinds, and Tano grew up playing a mix of Middle-Eastern and Balkan styles. This combines to create a very unique sound.
