Jordan Glenn & Jason Hoopes have played at Studio Grand on numerous occasions and have been friends to and supporters of the space. They are pleased to bring you four consecutive nights of collaborative improvisations with a diverse set of musical friends.
Tonight is the closing night of the residency and please note that it is an early Sunday show; doors open at 6:30pm.
Bruce Ackley: soprano and tenor saxophones, Bb clarinet.
A founding member of Rova, Ackley strives to stay involved with the Bay Area’s adventurous music scene. Recent non-Rova projects have included performing and recording projects with Henry Kaiser, Tania Chen, Fred Frith and others, as well as solo performance. Those projects have in some measure focused on the work of soprano saxophonist, Steve Lacy. The soprano is Ackley’s primary instrument, and pairing the lyric side of the horn with non-pitched / noise-based textures has long been a fascination of his. Ackley’s composing interests include creating structures for improvisers, as well as writing jazz-like ‘tunes’.
Danishta Rivero Castro
Danishta Rivero is a musician and sound artist based in Oakland. She is a vocalist who performs on electronics and the Hydrophonium, a water-based electro-acoustic percussion instrument she created.
Rivero performs solo as well as with her electro-acoustic duo Voicehandler with percussionist Jacob Felix Heule. She is also half of Las Sucias, a feminist noise reggeatón duo with Alexandra Buschman.
Previous projects include Blood Wedding, a just intonation noise duo with Chuck Johnson.
“I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. My early years involved drawing cartoons and taking dance classes from my aunt. At the age of 12 music and movies took over. I studied classical percussion, jazz and made short movies with my friends during high school. During college I played a lot of dinner-jazz gigs and recorded/toured in various rock bands.
In 2006 I relocated to the Bay Area and since then have been lucky enough to cross paths with Fred Frith, William Winant, Zeena Parkins, Roscoe Mitchell, Anantha Krishnan, Ben Goldberg, John Schott, Cory Wright, Aram Shelton, Steini Gunnarsson, Dominique Leone, Darren Johnston, Graham Connah, and the bands Jack O’ the Clock, Host Family, Efft, 20 Minute Loop, The Monolith, Beep!, tUnE-yArDs, Science Fiction, Evon, Arts & Sciences, and the Oakland Active Orchestra.”
Current projects include the longstanding group Wiener Kids and the large ensemble Beak, among others.
"...Glenn's work stands out, with the grace of an acrobat and the control of a serial killer..." -- Nazim Comunale
Jason Hoopes is a bassist and educator.
His work as bassist includes numerous Bay Area groups including but not limited to...
Jack O' The Clock
Scott Amendola / Karl Alfonso Defensor Evangelista
Eat The Sun
The Atomic Bomb Audition
Glenn & Hoopes also play in the Fred Frith Trio, which toured Europe in 2015 and recorded the CD Another Day in F**king Paradise for Intakt Records in 2016.
“When I proposed this trio I had nothing in mind beyond getting together with a couple of formidable musicians who I love and respect and seeing what would happen… Jason’s stunning ability to wring everything there is to be wrung out of an electric bass was as liberating as Jordan’s playful, irreverent, and absolute authority.” – Fred Frith.
