Oakland Freedom Jazz Society Presents:

Banyan Tree

Banyan Tree is an improvisatory duet formed in Los Angeles (2017) and peopled by Maneesh Raj Madahar and Jamie Green, on Fender Rhodes and amplified violin, respectively. Their rigorously naivist sound unfurls by tapping into vague hints of Hindustani classical modality and a tendency toward ephemeral geometrical structures, interlocking melodic and rhythmic forms which tend to appear and recede as do folding ocean ripples. The same techniques are applied similarly in their use of rhythmic and repetitive verbal recitations, which induce a heightened sensation of word-shapes while remaining primarily abstract-musical.

Joshua Allen (solo)

Joshua Allen has created his own personal language on the tenor saxophone, with an emphasis on polytonal and asymmetrical phrasing, as well as extending the range and sonic ability of the instrument. He does this with constant emphasis and study of the overtone series, and the generation of multiphonics from the application of this process.
