Curated by RDL+, Bay Area Bridges celebrates the Bay Area music scene, with Oakland as its launch pad. This series takes place the second Sunday of each month.

One of the most touching and versatile singers in the Bay Area, vocalist/composer Andrea Claburn’s music is always filled with grace and passion. Claburn is known for the “highly instrumental use of her voice” but also for her storytelling.  RDL+ is thrilled to team up with Claburn!  The show will feature new compositions by Claburn and RDL+.

Andrea Claburn

Vocalist/composer/arranger Andrea Claburn was born in Baltimore to a classical pianist mother and jazz aficionado father and raised in the classical tradition, studying both piano and violin and playing in orchestral ensembles before turning to vocal jazz. A conservatory-trained musician, Andrea’s musical depth shapes her exceptional vocal style, with a “highly instrumental use of her voice” that is “riveting to hear” (Lynn René Bailey). As a composer and lyricist, she breathes life into new songs as well as old, writing and arranging contemporary jazz standards and lyricizing a wide range of instrumental material from Ellington to Metheny; “I still think like an instrumentalist, because that’s where everything began for me.” Raised and educated largely in Northern California, Andrea earned a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Studies) from the California Jazz Conservatory, where she was mentored by some of the finest jazz artists on the West Coast, and in 2010 was awarded the Conservatory's highest vocal honor, the Mark Murphy Vocal Scholarship. In August, 2015 Andrea became a member of the vocal faculty of her alma mater, where she teaches private lessons in vocal technique, performance, and musicianship. Her debut album, Nightshade, a collection of her own original compositions and arrangements, was released in January, 2017 to wide critical acclaim and named one of the 10 best albums of the year by Andrew Gilbert, C. Michael Bailey, and Mike Jurkovic.

RDL+

With their 2014 debut album, Más P’alla Va, RDL+ started building an original sound that embodies the members’ collective ideas, inspirations, and histories. RDL+ is Ruthie Dineen on keys, Doug Lee on bass, Luis Salcedo on guitar, plus(+) the Bay Area's best up-and-coming musicians. The group focuses on writing and playing original compositions, while taking both lyrical and open improvisations on the pieces. While maintaining an aesthetic stemming from traditional jazz, the group experiments with odd meters, timbre, form, and melodic ideas.  Nonetheless, the exploratory nature of the group is always rooted in the essence of the composed or arranged pieces. In the summer of 2018, RDL+ released their second full-length album, Pacific Voyage. In the spirit of adventure, this live performance album captures it all. From placid waters to raging seas, Pacific Voyage sails the oceans in a vessel of original composition, powered by the raw emotions of the improvisational trio.
