Curated by RDL+, Bay Area Bridges celebrates the Bay Area music scene, with Oakland as its launch pad. This month, RDL+ features a collaboration with singer-songwriter Josh Boronkay.

Joshua Boronkay has been making music in the Bay Area for the last decade. He finds his roots in the American songwriting tradition taking from blues, jazz, folk and hip hop. His newest record, “JB Barton and Co.”, is due for release this summer.

Josh Boronkay

In the tradition of the great American songwriter, Joshua Boronkay emerges from a gumbo of influences. Listening to Joshua's songs you may detect a hint of Latin spice, or Delta blues, with a pinch of Kentucky bluegrass, served up on Tin Pan Alley, by some beat folkies smelling really funky. Any music lover will appreciate the depth of spirit and tradition in Joshua Boronkay's music.

Born in San Diego, Joshua started playing bass in blues bands as a teenager and soon found himself gravitating toward the art of songwriting. At a very young age Joshua was introduced to Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead by his father Daniel Boronkay; an avid concert goer and blues guitar player. As he dug deeper into the tradition of American music Joshua found a great appreciation for the blues of Son House and Muddy Waters. The Great American Songbook also became an integral part of Joshua's repertoire, including selections from the songbooks of the great Cole Porter, Fats Waller and Duke Ellington into his set. To top it all off, Joshua resonates strongly with the funk and soul music of the 70's and 80's, saturating his sound in the influence of James Brown and Prince. Josh has toured the Western United States with a number of groups as a side man and featured soloist. The Bucky Walters, The Berel Alexander Ensemble and Rita Lynn and the ADD Boys are just a few of the groups that Joshua has played with. By dedicating his life to the performance and education of music Joshua Boronkay hopes to share an appreciation and love of music inherent in any healthful culture.

With their 2014 debut album, Más P’alla Va, RDL+ started building an original sound that embodies the members’ collective ideas, inspirations, and histories. RDL+ is Ruthie Dineen on keys, Doug Lee on bass, Luis Salcedo on guitar, plus(+) the Bay Area's best up-and-coming musicians. The group focuses on writing and playing original compositions, while taking both lyrical and open improvisations on the pieces. While maintaining an aesthetic stemming from traditional jazz, the group experiments with odd meters, timbre, form, and melodic ideas.  Nonetheless, the exploratory nature of the group is always rooted in the essence of the composed or arranged pieces. In the summer of 2018, RDL+ released their second full-length album, Pacific Voyage. In the spirit of adventure, this live performance album captures it all. From placid waters to raging seas, Pacific Voyage sails the oceans in a vessel of original composition, powered by the raw emotions of the improvisational trio.
