Estudio Grand y Galería de la Raza se complace en presentar el Encuentro de Son Jarocho Oakland. Con la visión creativa y coordinación de Esther Cruz y Flora Zulli de Sonando Sur y patrocinado con el generoso apoyo de Fundación Akonadi, llevaremos a cabo un maravilloso mes de clases gratuitas y un fandango de bienvenida. Para el cierre del mes, vamos a tener la Charla con el Investigador Alvaro Alcántara, Presentación del Documental "En medio del agua" del Director J. Xavier Velasco y concierto con los Vega.

Studio Grand and Galería de la Raza are pleased to bring you Encuentro De Son Jarocho Oakland. With the vision of Esther Cruz and Flora Zulli along with the generous support of the Akonadi Foundaiton’s Beloved Community fund, we are able to bring you a wonderful month of free classes and an opening fandango. We will close the month out with a book talk with scholar Alvaro Alcántara López, a screening of director J. Xavier Velasco’s documentary “Medio del Agua"/"In Between Waters,"  and a concert with Los Vega.

Claudio Vega (Maestro de jarana, Jarana Instructor)

Son of Martha Vega and grandson of Don Andres Vega, began in the group The Vega project of the new generation of the Vega family with an extensive discography Sangre y Piel, Y Sigue la Tradición, De a Monton and their last recording, En Tonos MuyDiferentes. He has participated in the soundtrack of the filmFRIDA which won the Oscar for Best Soundtrack. Claudio has collaborated on recordings with Singer Olivia Gorra, Vive Latino, and Ambulante. In 2013 Claudio participated with his brother Fredi Vega and Leo Heiblum in the music composition from the movieWho is Dayanni Cristal filmed by Gael García Bernal. The Vegas recently performed at The Summer Festivals of Canada. They have also presented at the University of Utah, The Conservatory of Music in China, and at the Festival Cumbre Tajin in Papantla, Veracruz. As a promoter Claudio has taught numerous workshops within the United States and o abroad, in California, New York, China and Canada.

 

Esther Cruz (Maestra del Zapateado, Zapateado Instructor)

Since 1996, Esther began studying percussion and dances from Senegal, Congo, Guinea, Cuba and her native land of Veracruz. In 1999 she founded the group of percussionists Obini Aña: Mujeres del Tambor, where she recreated African rhythms, Afro-Caribbean, Son Jarocho and other new creations. The group was invited to present at several national and international festivals, such as the Festival Internacional Afrocaribeño in 2001 and 2002, twice at theXX Festival Santiago de Cuba Caribbean, Garifuna Festival in Livingston, Guatemala, The Encuentro de Pueblos Negros in Oaxaca, and The Jaltipan Seminary of Son Jarocho of Veracruz, among others. Additionally, Esther has participated with El Afrojarocho with Patricio Hidalgo, the Grammy nominated group Los Cojolites, the Fiesta de la Candelaria in Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, and numerous fandangos in Los Tuxtlas, Chacalapa, Otatitlán, and Cosoleacaque Veracruz.. She has been part of Sonando Surscenarios collective touring USA, Cuba and Colombia. As a visiting artista in New York City, she has worked with groups such as Mariachi Flor Toloache, Jarana Beat and Son Cosita Seria. She currently heads the Sonando Sur project and produces Café con Pan y Vuelta pa ́tras Tour 2015 with Alec Dempster and Zenen Zeferino in the cities of New York, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Chicago and Boston.
