Instructor Bio

Though originally from the Bay Area, Alice Riegert (Graduada Piu Piu) first laid eyes on capoeira at Capoeira Mestre Bimba school in Salvador, Brazil in 2005. Awe-struck by the martial art, she immediately started taking capoeira classes back in the US. She trained under Mestre Mariano of Capoeira Batuque as well as Mestre Acordeon and Mestra Suelly at UCA in Berkeley. In 2008 she spent a year in Salvador studying under Mestre Bamba of Capoeira Mestre Bimba and came full circle, joining the school the following year.

Alice has been helping run the Bay Area chapter of the school since 2010, teaching and assistant-teaching classes for all ages. She currently co-teaches at the San Pablo Community Center as part of the city’s COPT (Childhood Obesity Prevention Task Force). Having reached over 50 kids in the San Pablo/Richmond area, capoeira is the most successful course in the program. In the fall, Alice will start a Doctorate of Physical Therapy program at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland.
